Persanal data
Surname Name: Ondiek Nicholas Otieno

Nationality: kenyan.
Education and profession diploma-chauffeur to head of mission.
Arrived in milan in april 1996.
Ralationship with Milan
Why did you choose Milan as a location in which to live?
I have always been fascinated about Italy as a country especially the city of Milan. This particularly due to fashion , football and food.
Which scent does Milan bring to your mind?
When Milan is mentioned, what comes to my mind is fashion, beauty and nice food i.e. Risotto alla Milanese. And especially the scent of coffee and brioche in the morning.
What sound and colour do you associate to Milan.
Grey colour. Milan has a lot of grey buildings due to pollution. Almost every where you are walking in is cemented. The sky and air are also polluted. I would give it a rainbow colour due to its cosmopolitan status. Milan has a mixture of people from all over the world with different cultural background.
The good sound I would associate Milan with is the events and the orchestra at La Scala. The bad sound is of the traffic congestion and the city train transport (tram)
Are these different from those which you associate with your hometown.
Certainly yes. My hometown is still virgin-green with trees and plants. Less traffic and not polluted.
Is there a street, an area, a place or a shop which reminds you of your home town?
Not much, Kenya being a former British colony has much of its settings the British style. The only place is a bar in the area of Porta Venezia which has the same settings and operations like a bar by the name Inzogo in my home town.
Is there a particular place that you love in Milan.
A-Yes. The cathedral (Duomo di Milano). As much as I have seen it in these fifteen years in Milan it’s still the master-piece I love in Milan.
Identity
How do you identify yourself; as a South African, an Italo-African, an Italian or a Milanese?
I would first identify myself as a Kenyan due to patriotism and cultural background. As much as I learn and practise other cultures, I love my culture. There is a Swahili saying which says `mwacha mila ni mtumwa`. Those who leave their culture/tradition are messengers (loose translation) A person who has lost its culture is a slave. Language being part of culture greatly influence how we people relates with another. I would also identify myself as a Kenyan Milanese. Staying in Milan for 15 years has made me learn a lot of things about Milanese culture.
Work
Do you enjoy your job?
Certainly, it has a lot of challenges and also gives me a lot of experience. I  have learnt a lot from it.
Is it what you had wished to do?
Not exactly.
Did you have other desires/dreams?
I have always desired to be a lawyer. This has always been my dream but as the saying goes ‘it’s never too late for anything’.
